چکیده

Heterogeneous disk arrays are becoming a common configuration in many sites and specially in storage area networks (SAN). As new disks have different characteristics than old ones, adding new disks or replacing old ones ends up in a heterogeneous disk array. Current solutions to this kind of arrays do not take advantage of the improved characteristics of the new disks. In this paper, we present a block-distribution algorithm that takes advantage of these new characteristics and thus improves the performance and capacity of heterogeneous disk arrays compared to current solutions.

Taking advantage of heterogeneity in disk arrays

Disk arrays, or RAIDs, have become the solution to increase the capacity and bandwidth of most storage system, but their usage has some limitations because all the disks in the array have to be equal. Nowadays, assuming a homogeneous set of disks to build an array is becoming a not very realistic assumption in many environments, especially in low-cost clusters of workstations. It is difficult t...

EIDE Disk Arrays and Its Implement

Along with the information high-speed development, RAID, which has large capacity, high availability, and high performance, has played an important role in storage system. Comparison with SCSI disk drive, the body of EIDE disk drive is similar to SCSI’s, but for long time, EIDE disk drive performance is lower than SCSI disk drive’s. Recently,an EIDE drive is rapidly developed. New EIDE drive al...

Data allocation in a Heterogeneous Disk Array (HDA) with multiple RAID levels for database applications

We consider the allocation of Virtual Arrays (VAs) in a Heterogeneous Disk Array (HDA). Each VA holds groups of related objects and datasets such as files, relational tables, which has similar performance and availability characteristics. We evaluate single-pass data allocation methods for HDA using a synthetic stream of allocation requests, where each VA is characterized by its RAID level, dis...

Distributing Orthogonal Redundancy on Adaptive Disk Arrays

When upgrading storage systems, the key is migrating data from old storage subsystems to the new ones for achieving a data layout able to deliver high performance I/O, increased capacity and strong data availability while preserving the effectiveness of its location method. However, achieving such data layout is not trivial when handling a redundancy scheme because the migration algorithm must ...

Striping Policies in Multiclass Disk Arrays Ph.d. Thesis Proposal

Redundant Arrays of Inexpensive Disks (RAID) provide data striping for improved performance and redundancy for increased reliability. Workloads utilizing RAID disk arrays have been divided into two categories, those characterized by large, sequential accesses and those characterized by small, random accesses, typically denoted as scientiic applications and on{line transaction processing (OLTP) ...
